Does Nikon Develop a Medium Format Camera?

Nikon China publishes (accidentally?) a 67 MegaPixel image on its main social media (Weibo). There’s no reason this photo was not taken with Nikon’s camera. But Nikon does not have a camera that is capable of shooting 67MP, which leads us to the assumption that Nikon is developing an MP monster (medium format?).

Nikon publishes a 67MP photo

Spotted by NikonRumors, Nikon China posted four pictures on their official Weibo account. It appears that the resolution of one of those photos is 67MP (6670 × 10000). You can check it out by yourself by downloading the source from here. The picture initiated debates between users who were surprised by the high megapixel count. Explore the slides below that shows the picture with its magnification.

Is it the Z8?

Nikon currently does not have a camera with a 67MP sensor (Currently, Nikon cameras are not able to capture images above 50MP including the flagship Z9). Of course, the picture could be upscaled or taken with another camera. According to NikonRumor, a reverse image search of the photo did not return any results, which reduces the possibility of Nikon China using a stock photo, and why should they? Furthermore, why should Nikon upload a 67MP image to their social account, and what’s the point in doing so? Is it the Z8? We don’t think so. The Z8 or even the speculated Z7 Mark III are going to sit between the Z7/Z6 and the Z9. Hence, it’s not logical for Nikon to release a sub-flagship with a higher pixel count than the flagship itself.

Is it a medium format?

It might. Medium format cameras tend to have sensors that range between 50MP and 100MP in resolution. However, it’s hard to think that Nikon is currently investing vast resources in order to develop a medium format camera, as it struggles to fulfill existing Z9 orders, which are selling great BTW. What’s your take on this?

  1. This 67 MP image could also be multiple images stitched together as a “panorama”.
But my hope is that Nikon is working on a high megapixel, small bodied, weather-resistant camera for landscape and portrait photographers.
