Atomos starts a new journey

It seems that the game is not over for Atomos. Indeed, the company underwent some challenges, but now it appears it’s on the right track. On its first Live session, Atomos returning CEO Jeromy Young reveals some intruding development, The inaugural Atomos Live was streamed on YouTube on Wednesday, 14th February. It was hosted by PhotoJoseph, who was joined by returning Atomos CEO Jeromy Young, recently appointed COO Peter Barber, Paul Scurrell, Senior VP of Product, and John Restivo, our resident Camera to Cloud expert. Young introduced some new solid benefits, like a 3-year warranty on all purchases, free base upgrades, and 6 months of cloud for free on buying Atomos products (see slides below). But the most interesting was the Q&A session between Joseph to Young, which was focused on BRAW and lighting.

If Blackmagic said okay we would love to put BRAW. Blackmagic RAW has done well, especially in what a great software Resolve is, so we would love to enable our customers to have the advantages of both, so no problem we would love to record BRAW. It’s up to Blackmagic if they’d like to give it to us, and we’re ready to take that call anytime.

BRAW support in Atomos recorders

Here’s the question related to BRAW: “Your recorders capture raw to ProRes RAW, which is great if you’re a Final Cut editor. However, a lot of us are editing on DaVinci Resolve, and we have been begging Blackmagic to support ProRes RAW but for whatever reason they’re just not doing it. Thus, the alternative to that is the recorders could record Blackmagic RAW (BRAW) so that is as far as I know technically possible. Is there anything stopping you guys from doing that? Would you guys put Blackmagic RAW into the Atomos recorders? Young answered: “If Blackmagic said okay we would love to put BRAW. Blackmagic RAW has done well, especially in what a great software Resolve is, so we would love to enable our customers to have the advantages of both, so no problem we would love to record BRAW. It’s up to Blackmagic if they’d like to give it to us, and we’re ready to take that call anytime”.

It hasn’t increased the speed of workflow or the ease of use, and you’ll see Atomos moving into the lighting world, not in a traditional way, but in a very high-tech way, where we’re electronically controlling lights from Ninjas, and controlling the image, and giving you those wonderful 4K HDR images because lighting is the base of all great camera production.

Entering the lighting world

At the end of the live session, Young elaborated on Atomos’ new angle of innovation, which is lighting. As stated by Young: “We brainstormed what areas of production are still in cinema and film and TV but haven’t propagated down to the kind of mass production market that we service, and the key area that we identified that sits right next to every Ninja on every set is lighting. The lighting world has moved to LED lighting but it hasn’t moved to control lighting from a central place. It hasn’t increased the speed of workflow or the ease of use, and you’ll see Atomos moving into the lighting world, not in a traditional way, but in a very high-tech way, where we’re electronically controlling lights from Ninjas, and controlling the image, and giving you those wonderful 4K HDR images because lighting is the base of all great camera production. And so every time someone buys a Ninja they buy a few lights, and we definitely want to make sure they are buying our lights”. Furthermore, Young added: “Come to NAB and you’re going to see what we’ve been working on. So yeah that’s my answer to that: Lights lights lights”.

No word on the Sapphire sensor

We were curious to hear something new about the Atomos Sapphire 8K global shutter sensor introduced 1.5 years ago. Unfortunately, this sensor wasn’t mentioned even once during the whole 40-minute session. Young should mention something about the Sapphire sensor since it’s supposed to be one of Atomos’ most significant inventions. Anyway, the lighting stuff sounds fascinating and we can’t wait to explore how it affects productions. Watch the Atomos Live below:
