First, let’s answer the question above, and the answer is NO! Sony has launched its new smartphone flagship, which is the Xperia PRO-I. The PRO-I is armed with an impressive 1-inch sensor that allows phase detection autofocus, and a real (not computerized) cinematic depth of field, as opposed to the computerized bokeh of the iPhone 13 Pro. Explore below the Xperia PRO-I specs and a very enjoyable video test.

Xperia PRO-I: 1-inch sensor

Sony has today announced a new Xperia smartphone developed specifically for today’s content creators, the Xperia PRO-I. Combining a 1.0-type sensor, a 24mm ZEISS Tessar Optics, advanced image processing and AF (autofocus), 4K 120p video recording, and more, the Xperia PRO-I aimed to deliver professional imaging quality from an ultra-slim 8.9mm form factor.

Eye AF technology and object tracking in video shooting

The new Xperia PRO-I delivers high-quality video performance and easy-to-use post-production features for a stress-free workflow. For greater creative flexibility, the Xperia PRO-I is the world’s first smartphone to enable the user to shoot high-quality video in 4K 120fps, which allows users to capture and playback fast-moving scenes and slow-motion video at up to 5x. Capturing smooth, shake-free video is facilitated thanks to the latest Optical SteadyShot with FlawlessEye. Xperia PRO-I is the first in the Xperia line-up to introduce Eye AF technology and object tracking in videomaking, allowing the user to keep a sharp focus on the subject.

Inspired by the VENICE

Xperia PRO-I also includes two new video features for video and filmmaking. For quick, high-quality videos and vlogging, the new Videography Pro feature, inspired by Sony’s long history of imaging technology that supports video production and direct feedback from videographers, includes creative settings in a single location. Users can intuitively and accurately adjust settings such as focus, exposure, and white balance even while shooting a movie, to fit the shooting environment. In addition, Xperia PRO-I adopts a high-precision Level meter that has been individually calibrated. By assigning the “Videography Pro” application to the “shortcut key” on the side of the Xperia PRO-I body, users can immediately begin recording like they would using a camera. Users can also assign other applications or features to the shortcut key. For filmmaking, the Cinematography Pro feature pulls from Sony’s professional video camera technology to easily create a cinematic look with eight different color settings inspired by Sony’s VENICE digital cinema camera, a 21:9 recording ratio, and more.

Xperia PRO-I highlights and features:

  1. World’s First Smartphone to include a 1.0-type Exmor RS image sensor with phase-detection AF (autofocus) for enhanced low light performance, high dynamic range, and cinematic bokeh. The 1.0-type Exmor RS sensor is the same one used in the award-winning RX100 VII camera and optimized for smartphones.
  2. BIONZ X imaging processor for mobile and a front-end LSI for clear and noise-free images even when shooting in the dark
  3. 315 phase-detection AF points that cover 90% of the frame, allowing users to continue to capture subjects at high speed and with high accuracy even in scenes focusing is difficult
  4. Advanced AF capabilities to support “Real-time Eye AF” and “Real-time tracking” that keeps track of moving objects with high accuracy by using AI
  5. ZEISS Tessar Optics with anti-reflective coating and dual aperture F2.0/F4.0 for low light performance, high dynamic range, and bokeh
  6. World´s first 4K video recording at 120fps High frame rate in a smartphone and includes a built-in strap-hole and a dedicated shutter button for easy, quick control
  7. New Videography Pro feature combining creative flexibility with ease of use
  8. First Xperia to support Eye AF and Object Tracking during video shooting
  9. High-quality video performance and crystal-clear audio recording
  10. 4K HDR OLED 120Hz refresh rate display
  11. High-quality audio features, including Dolby Atmos, 3.5mm audio jack, Full-stage Stereo Speakers, 360 Reality Audio
  12. Corning Gorilla Glass Victus

And what about the footage?

In order to examine the footage, explore the video below which was created by Philip Bloom. Philip is a documentary filmmaker who has been hired by Sony to produce a video that shows the Xperia PRO-I shooting capabilities. According to Philip, the Xperia PRO-I is the best camera phone he has used. The video was made with a very early pre-production model, the image quality wasn’t final and the 50mm lens wasn’t working. The majority was shot with the main 24mm camera as it is the one with the 1.0 type sensor. Everything was shot handheld. No add ons were used at all. Check it out below:

Not an iPhone 13 Pro killer

Yesterday, iOS 15.1 was pushed to iPhone (and iPad) users. With iOS 15.1 or later, iPhone 13 Pro or iPhone 13 Pro Max can record videos in the Apple ProRes format in the Camera app using any of its cameras in Video mode. Thus, you can capture ProRes videos on an iPhone 13 Pro at 30fps / 1080p on 128GB models or 4K on 256GB models and above. The iPhone owns a much smaller sensor than the Xperia PRO-I (no info about the iPhone 13 Pro image sensor). Nevertheless, its bokeh is computerized as opposed to optically made in the Xperia. What’s better, computer-generated cinematic imagery, or a pure optical output from a large sensor? Judging by the footage, the iPhone has better image quality compared to the Xperia PRO-I. You can’t tell if the bokeh is computer-generated at all since it’s accurately visualized by a precise algorithm and advanced technology. Nevertheless, a large image sensor implemented on a mobile phone has its own significant advantages. But footage-wise, iPhone 13 Pro wins. But this is just my personal perspective.

Pricing and Availability

The new Xperia PRO-I will be available unlocked in December 2021 for approximately $1,800.00 USD. You can preorder it on the B&H website.

Final insights

The Xperia PRO-I and the iPhone 13 Pro are both flagships smartphones that are dedicated to enhancing the cinematographic capabilities of phones. However, each utilizes a whole different approach. The Xperia PRO-I relies on its large 1-inch sensor that is considered a huge sensor for mobile phones. On the other hand, the iPhone 13 Pro utilizes advanced algorithms and technologies, during shooting and post. None of them is supposed to replace a cinema camera, yet. But this will occur eventually.
