The filming industry bans Russia

A few days ago, we’ve reported about Canon’s announcement to halt all its product deliveries into Russia. Now, Avid and Adobe have announced the same. Adobe stops all new sales and limits Creative Cloud access in Russia, and Avid ceases all sales and support to customers, users, and resellers in Russia and Belarus. Here are their statements.

Adobe’s statement

Adobe will halt all new sales of Adobe products and services in Russia.

Halt all new sales and services

“Over the past several days, we have continued to witness unprovoked, violent attacks on Ukraine and the tragic loss of innocent lives. The images are horrifying and heartbreaking. As we see this tragedy unfold, we believe we have a responsibility to ensure our products and services are not used in support of this unlawful war. Earlier this week, Adobe took a series of steps to ensure the health and safety of our employees and provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Effective immediately, Adobe will halt all new sales of Adobe products and services in Russia”

Terminate access to Creative Cloud

“We have been complying with the government sanctions being imposed by the United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom to ensure Adobe’s products and services are not being used by prohibited entities. In addition, we are terminating access to Adobe Creative Cloud, Adobe Document Cloud, and Adobe Experience Cloud to Russian government-controlled media outlets”.

Donation of $1 million USD

“To support the growing humanitarian crisis and refugee situation in the region, the Adobe Foundation has made a series of grants of over $1 million USD. The Foundation will focus on direct aid and medical assistance to communities in Ukraine, as well as resettlement and transportation needs for families fleeing the country and seeking resettlement status as refugees in neighboring countries. It will also provide investments to organizations that support journalists and photojournalists on the ground as part of our commitment to fighting misinformation. We are also providing ways for our employees to help, including matching employee donations. We understand there is only so much one company can do to impact an unjustified invasion. But we also understand our civic and moral responsibility to support democracy and humanity. We are committed to doing everything we can to stand in support of those directly affected and with our entire Adobe community”.

Avid’s statement

To this end, Avid has ceased all sales and support to all customers, users and resellers in Russia and Belarus.

Stopping the propaganda

“Russia’s political leaders have crossed a line by attacking the sovereign nation of Ukraine, which has resulted in harm and disruption to her people, including our Avid colleagues. Much of the world has responded with harsh economic sanctions – and Avid is joining them to apply pressure on the Russian regime. We simply cannot make it easier for Russia’s political leaders, through state-run and state-owned news and media organizations, to spread propaganda and disinformation”.

Halt all sales

“To this end, Avid has ceased all sales and support to all customers, users, and resellers in Russia and Belarus. At Avid, we strive to make the world a better place by connecting all people everywhere through the power of media. That’s a big vision, but one that Team Avid fundamentally believes in. As history often reminds us, the world is not as benevolent and caring as we would like it to be. And as much as we believe in the positive power of media, there are times when that power is not used for good. This is clearly one of those times. Last week, we proudly chose to stand with the people of Ukraine. We have been assisting our Ukraine colleagues and their families to bring them relief on multiple fronts – and intend to do so until peace returns to Ukraine. We urge others in our tight-knit Media & Entertainment industry to also join the international pressure campaign against Russia’s political leaders to stop their aggression immediately”.

Thoughts

Avid is the world’s dominant news and media application, including Russia. Stopping sales and support to Avid products can cause some limitations in generating news pieces. However, it won’t stop it completely. As for Adobe, it’s more complicated from the end-user perspective. Since Adobe products are cloud-based, it’s easier for Adobe to control the usage of the applications even geographically. Moreover, besides Canon, Adobe, and Avid, there’re many more outlets in our industry that are participating in the sanctions against Russia. For instance, major rumors websites blocked access to their Russian users. Anyway, the responses to these announcements are mixed. Some of the users agree with those sanctions, and others are pissed off by saying that there’s no logic to apply a collective punishment because of one “madman”. What are your thoughts about this?

  1. When the US killed people in Afghanistan, Libya, Iran, Iraq, Vietnam, you were all silent. When Ukraine bombed its cities in the South-East, you were silent and continued to supply weapons to them!
Do you think that with your sanctions you are making the Russians worse for us?
At first we will use pirated software, and then we will write our own. Likewise with the rest of the products. We have liberated the world from fascist Germany and will soon liberate the rest of the world from the Nazis.

    • Those using other atrocities committed by other countries to excuse the war crimes of Putin are doing propaganda for the Russian state and they are some of the most vile, disgusting people on the face of the earth.

      • Let’s see how you sing later.
Those. Do you justify the murder of Ukraine’s own citizens on the territory of Donbass? Although what am I, the United States has always been adherents of fascism and sponsored Hitler in the 43rd, and then invited them to work after the war.

  2. Lots of right wing fascists coming out of the woodwork here. Infowars is the enemy of democracy. Alex Jones is an insane clown. The only ones against sanctions on Russia are white supremacists, fascists, the oligarchs and lovers of autocracy. We need more sanctions, not less. The Russian people are against the invasion of Ukraine. All Europeans are demonstrating against Putin’s actions. Putin has either murdered all his opponents or jailed them. He is a megalomaniac. Only a madman has his military fire upon nuclear reactors.

    • The funniest thing is you call those against the sanctions “white supremacists” when litteraly every non-white country in the world, besides south Korea and Japan (which id like to remind you, have permanent US military presence on their soil) is not sanctioning Russia.

      • It’s only funny to yourself. Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, and Australia have sanctioned Russia. Together, they form an economic powerhouse. Authoritarian governments and those with close ties to Russia have naturally been reluctant to join in the sanctions. Only an idiot would not understand why other authoritarian governments would be reluctant to impose sanctions. Those countries include China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Myanmar and Indonesia. India also has strong military ties to Russia. Any two year-old can understand why they aren’t sanctioning Russia. Not sure what your point is. Hope you are being paid well for spreading pro-Russian nonsense on the Internet.
