Warner Bros. Pictures has released the BTS featurette of its Mortal Kombat. Directed by Simon McQuoid and shot by Germain McMicking on the ARRI ALEXA LF and Mini LF, paired with Panavision lenses. Watch it below.
Mortal Kombat – The movie
“Mortal Kombat,” is inspired by the blockbuster video game franchise, which most recently enjoyed the most successful video game launch in its history, Mortal Kombat 11. The film was directed by Australian commercial filmmaker Simon McQuoid, marking his feature directorial debut, and produced by James Wan (“The Conjuring” universe films, “Aquaman,”), Todd Garner (“Into the Storm,” “Tag”), McQuoid and E. Bennett Walsh (“Men in Black: International,” “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”).
The film was shot by cinematographer Germain McMicking (Partisan 2015, Berlin Syndrome 2017, and True Detective 2014). McMicking has been working extensively within the commercial industry for the past decade as well as shooting documentaries, and narrative film and television works.
Shot on ALEXA LF, Mini LF, and Panavision lenses
Mortal Kombat’s production took place at Adelaide Studios and other locations in South Australia. The shooting lasted from September 16 to December 13, 2019. The film was aimed to be screened at IMAX theaters, thus, the ARRI ALEXA LF and Mini LF were chosen. These large format cameras were paired with a variety of Panavision Anamophics (Panavision Ultra Vistas, Ultra Panatars, Super Speeds, and more). Watch the newly released BTS video below.
Release
The film was scheduled to be released on March 5, 2021, but was moved up to January 15, 2021, until producer Todd Garner confirmed in November 2020 that the film would be delayed until theaters reopen due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After Warner Bros announced that their entire 2021 slate would be released on HBO Max on the same date they hit theaters, the film was given a new release date of April 16, 2021, in theaters and on HBO Max.
